Rail Safety, Confidence, and Behaviour

This workshop has been carefully created to ensure children learn the most important safety messages about the railways, whilst also gaining confidence to travel by train.

Designed to educate – not to frighten or shock – we explore the dangers of the railway alongside the solutions for staying safe, with plenty of focus on what, and who, can help us when travelling by train.

We strive to make our learning “sticky” through engaging and interactive approaches, including a knowledge grab, at the beginning and end, through QR coding technology.

With plenty of opportunity to discuss; make decisions; actively participate; engage with visual props; and get dressed up, this workshop delivers skills and knowledge that are important for life.

Students will learn:

safety considerations for travelling by train, including content about electrification and level crossings

bespoke support to help overcome barriers to accessing the railway

considerations for appropriate behaviour on trains and at stations

Who is this workshop for?

All our workshops are bespoke for each setting and can be adapted for ages 4 to 18, and for students with additional needs.

Completing this workshop is a requirement for any class who is planning to travel with us on one of our free train trips.

How long does this workshop last?

We recommend 60-90 minutes for this workshop.

For the youngest students we can reduce this to 45 minutes.

Green Tracks: Sustainable Travel and the Environment

This engaging workshop builds on our Rail Safety, Confidence, and Behaviour programme, helping children and young people explore how their travel choices can make a positive difference to the world around them. Through interactive activities, discussions, and real-world examples, students learn how public transport, particularly rail travel, can help reduce congestion, improve air quality, and support a more sustainable future. Designed to inspire rather than lecture, the workshop encourages students to think about the environmental impact of everyday journeys and empowers them to make informed travel choices. As with all our workshops, learning is brought to life through participation, decision-making activities, visual resources, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to share ideas. Students leave with a greater understanding of sustainability and the role they can play in creating greener communities.

Students will learn:

• how different modes of transport impact the environment and contribute to climate change
• the environmental benefits of travelling by train and using public transport
• how sustainable travel choices can improve local communities, health, and wellbeing
• practical ways to consider sustainability when planning everyday journeys

This workshop supports learning around sustainability, environmental responsibility, citizenship, and informed decision-making, helping students understand how individual actions contribute to wider environmental outcomes.

Who is this workshop for? All our workshops are bespoke for each setting and can be adapted for ages 4 to 18, and for students with additional needs. Green Tracks includes our Rail Safety, Confidence, and Behaviour programme to provide a more comprehensive understanding of safe, confident, and sustainable travel. Completing this workshop qualifies the group to travel with us on one of our free train trips.

Students will learn:

• Alongside delivery of the key rail safety messages, we will introduce your students to a wide range of jobs in the railway industry – at the station, on the train, on and around the tracks, and behind the scenes (e.g. an office or depot).
• We will introduce the concept of personal strengths (skills and attributes) and the part these play in being effective at your job.
• Students will reflect on their own personal strengths and areas for development.
• Students will consider the skills and attributes needed for a particular career and identify members of their class they think would be well-suited to this role as a result. For example, a customer host needs to be organised, polite, friendly and patient, and enjoy interacting with other people.
• The workshop will be interactive. To bring the learning to life, students will dress up and role play as dispatchers, ticket office workers, customer hosts etc.
• The messages, visuals and language used promote inclusion, challenge stereotypes, and broaden aspirations.

This workshop has been created for Years 5 & up, however we can adapt this workshop for other ages and for students with additional needs.

STEM Tracks: Coding, Problem Solving and Railway Technology

This exciting hands-on workshop introduces students to the world of coding, engineering, and technology through the engaging context of the railway. Using Intelino smart trains and interactive track systems, students explore coding concepts in a practical and meaningful way, seeing first-hand how instructions and programming can control the movement and behaviour of trains. Through challenges, experimentation, and teamwork, learners develop problem-solving skills whilst gaining an understanding of the technology that keeps modern railways moving. Designed to make STEM accessible and enjoyable for all learners, this workshop encourages curiosity, creativity, and resilience. Students are given opportunities to test ideas, learn from mistakes, and discover how coding can be used to solve real-world challenges. As with all our workshops, learning is highly interactive and delivered through engaging activities that encourage active participation, discussion, critical thinking, and collaboration.

Students will learn:

• the fundamentals of coding, algorithms, and logical thinking
• how commands and programming can be used to control and automate railway systems
• problem-solving, debugging, and testing skills through practical challenges
• how technology, engineering, and innovation play a vital role in the modern railway
• the importance of teamwork, communication, and perseverance when solving STEM challenges

This workshop supports learning across Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, whilst developing key transferable skills that are valuable for future learning and careers.

Who is this workshop for?

All our workshops are bespoke for each setting and can be adapted for all ages and abilities, and for students with additional needs. Activities can be tailored to suit learners who are completely new to coding, as well as those with previous programming experience. We recommend a conversation with your local LDO to discuss your student’s prior knowledge of coding etc. in order to maximise the opportunities within the classroom. This session can also be used as an activity ‘on location’ for those wanting ideas for their travel ideas with us.

How long does this workshop last?

We recommend 60-90 minutes for this workshop, depending on the age of participants and the complexity of the coding challenges. Longer sessions can be provided to allow students to undertake more advanced programming and engineering tasks.

County Lines

Students will understand how gangs target people; the disparity between the expectations and reality of being in a gang; and ways to overcome barriers to helping, and being helped.

OVERVIEW

This workshop is built around a powerful, short film, ‘Running the Lines‘, that explores one young person’s story of being targeted, on the railways, by a County Lines gang. The story follows Evan, who is groomed, exploited and forced to move drugs for a London based organised crime group.  *Please be aware that this video contains knife imagery.

After watching the film, the rest of the workshop is split into three 20-minute sessions:

Session 1 explores how gang-members target and groom young people, and some of the factors that can make a person more vulnerable to exploitation.

Session 2 explores the stages of recruitment into County Lines gangs.

Session 3 explores the way young people can look for the signs of grooming in their peers and tips on how to get out.

Sometimes, we have to look back before we can look forward and this concept underpins this transport design workshop. Students will explore the history of transport by creating a transport timeline, thinking about how the way we move about has changed over hundreds of years.

They are encouraged to become mini designers by getting crafty and coming up with a transport invention for the future, drawing on their understanding of sustainability and passenger experience to make it as innovative as possible.

Students will learn:

how transport has changed since the earliest forms of transport to modern day technology

the concept of sustainable and healthy travel

how modern day solutions are being created to tackle climate change

how different modes of transport have developed for the better – or worse over time
