OS Map Skills Challenge – Bristol

Overview

This resource has been designed for students to practise their OS map skills using an extract from their local area. Students will be challenged to use 4- and 6-figure grid references, symbols, keys, contour lines, scales and compass points to learn about Bristol’s human and physical geography features.

Curriculum Links

KS2 Geography

  • Use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom

KS3 Geography

  • Build on their knowledge of globes, maps and atlases and apply and develop this knowledge routinely in the classroom and in the field.
  • Interpret Ordnance Survey maps in the classroom and the field, including using grid references and scale, topographical and other thematic mapping
