Words for a War Horse

Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to select vocabulary that reflects their knowledge of the role that horses played in WWI and how they feel about it.
1 hour


In this lesson, students will be transported back to WWI to learn about the remarkable bravery, strength and sacrifice of war horses.

From this, they will focus in on the Shirehampton Remount Depot, and learn how any why 300,00 of the magnificent beasts passed through there on their way to and from the battlefields.

Students will collaborate to make their own War Horse Memorial.



Pupils should be taught about:

  • events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally
  • significant historical events, people and places in their own locality

KS1 ENGLISH (Reading):

Pupils should be taught to:

  • develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by listening to and discussing (and expressing views about – Yr 2) a wide range of non-fiction at a level beyond that at which they can read independently.
